Teat Dipping

This product is used direct without dilution. Fill a Teat Dip cup 2/3 full. Immediately after each cow has been milked, dip each teat in the solution ensuring that the whole surface of the teat comes in contact with the solution. Teat cup should be emptied after each milking and teats washed after following milking.

Teat Spraying

This product is used direct without dilution. After milking, spray the entire surface of the teat. Wash teat before next milking.

Pre Milking/Teat Cleaning

This product is used direct without dilution. Before milking, spray/dip the entire surface of the teat. Use a disposable paper towel to clean teats before milking.

Topsan SC Plus has been proven and tested by farmers to eliminate and reduce S.C.C. and protects the complete udder and teats for 12-14 hours. Select the + icons below for a more detailed description on the use of chlorine-dioxide and teat conditioning, please feel free to get in touch for more information.

  • Topsan contains Two Biocides in solution with Chlorine-Dioxide as the primary germicide which is an incredibly effective broad spectrum, anti-inflammatory, bacterial, fungicidal and virucidal agent which will give LONG LASTING RESIDUAL BACTERCIDE REMAINING GERMICIDAL ON THE TEATS AND COMPLETE UDDER FOR UP TO 12 HOURS PLUS were as all other teat sprays only contain a single biocide in solution such as Iodine, Chlorhexidine or Lactic acid based formulations these will only give a very minimum protection of 4-5 hours max.
  • The formulation is buffered with Japanese mint oil which stimulates blood circulation in the udder and teat end (oxytocin) the release of oxytocin in turn allows quick milk let down if Topsan is used as a pre-spray within 20-30 seconds of contact. On the other hand as the cows are post sprayed / dipped leaving the parlour again the mint oil in solution will stimulate blood circulation allowing any bacteria that may have travelled up into the teat canal and udder before spraying to be carried away for the red blood cells to kill and in turn providing a bacteria free udder for milk production to begin again. When used as a Pre –Spray it provides excellent cleaning properties for the removal of organic matter with ease.
  • Topsan is knowing to provide to Maximum Teat Conditioning which is achieved with a combination of Chlorine-Dioxide the active Biocide which also helps to soften Hyperkeratotic tissue around the teat end and the three skin conditioning products Glycerine, Lanolin and sorbitol oils providing excellent teat and udder protection. The formulation also includes a natural fly repellent solution which we blend into the product at all times during production.

The detailed information below explains below the two products.

  • While chlorine dioxide has “chlorine” in its name, its chemistry is radically different from that of chlorine.
  • As we all learned in high school chemistry, we can mix two compounds and create a third that bears little resemblance to its parents. For instance, by mixing two parts of hydrogen gas with one of oxygen – liquid water is the formed. We should not be misled by the fact that chlorine and chlorine dioxide share a word in common. The chemistries of the two compounds are completely different.
  • Chlorine and chlorine dioxide are both oxidising agents (electron receivers). However, chlorine has the capacity to take in two electrons, whereas chlorine dioxide can absorb five. This means that, mole for mole, ClO2 is 2.6 times more effective than chlorine.

  • If equal, if not greater importance is the fact that chlorine dioxide will not react with many organic compounds, and as a result ClO2 does not produce environmentally dangerous chlorinated organics. For example; aromatic compounds have carbon atoms arranged in rings and they may have other atoms, such as chlorine, attached to these rings, to form a chlorinated aromatic – a highly toxic compound that persists in the environment long after it is produced.

  • Chlorine dioxide’s behaviour as an oxidising agent is quite dissimilar. Like ozone, the predominant oxidation reaction mechanism for chlorine dioxide  proceeds through a process known as free radical electrophilic (i.e. electron-attracting) abstraction rather than by oxidative substitution or addition (as in chlorinating agents such as chlorine or hypochlorite). This means that chlorinated organic compounds such as THMs and HAAs are not produced as a result of disinfection using chlorine dioxide

  • Chlorine dioxide products are more effective under organic load. When milk, mud or
manure are present on teats, these organic materials increases the pH on the skin. Iodine
is negatively affected by these pH increases and loses killing ability with the organic
material present. Chlorine dioxide is not affected by this high pH level when organic
materials are present and is able to maintain killing ability.
  • Also, ClO2 products have proven to have a quick kill – a 15 second kill as proven
in standardized tests developed by the Association of Analytical Chemists (AOAC).
With these AOAC testing methods, germicides must achieve a 5-log reduction in 15
seconds to be considered effective. Topchem’s Topsan Teat Spray has provided a complete
kill in 5 seconds – with and without a 10% milk load.

Although ClO2 has been used in udder disinfection for the past 15 years, it has been
used commercially for over 60 years. It is used for disinfection and odor control and has
been known for broad-spectrum killing ability.
Some examples of industrial chlorine dioxide use include:

  • Washing fruit and vegetables
  • Disinfecting meat and poultry
  • Disinfecting food processing equipment
  • Sanitizing water

No. While ClO2 has chlorine in its name, chlorine dioxide’s chemistry is radically different

than that of chlorine. Bleach is a hypochlorite/hypochlorus acid, which is a more

corrosive oxidizing system. Chlorine dioxide is gentler on hands and teat skin and has less tendency to become inactivated by organic matter (mud, manure, milk) than bleach.

Chlorine dioxide is residue safe, the active ingredients break down to products naturally found in the environment – organic acids and salt. It is environmentally friendly and not harsh on teat skin. In fact, all of the Topchem formulations are fast, safe and effective.

  • It’s been clear for years: the chlorine dioxide (ClO2) class of teat dips effectively prevents mastitis.Numerous studies worldwide have proven it. And somewhere along the way, while TOPSAN was working hard to protect cows from mastitis, a welcome upshot became apparent: bad teat ends improved with ClO2 usage.
  • Though no formal study unveiled this discovery, positive field reports have poured in and continue to do so. The effect on bad teats has been so predictable, even foremost milk quality consultants have taken note, recommending ClO2 teat dips to help heal teats with hyperkeratosis, or rough teat ends.
  • Their observations indicate the ClO2 class of teat dips are very effective in softening keratin, allowing keratin removal with aggressive action during udder prep.
  • Softening is Key: The question has been posed that if chlorine dioxide “dissolves hyperkeratotic tissue, wouldn’t it also dissolve skin?”

    • Chlorine dioxide does not dissolve hyperkeratotic tissue. It softens it for easier removal.

Foot Bath Solution

Foot infections will generate a lot of heat with in the foot and this enables the caking to multiply rapidly around the foot, unfortunately a lot of the products that are on the market place (e.g ) zinc, bluestone, formaldehyde etc can not penetrate through this build up resulting the foot infection spreading throughout the foot and the rest of the herd / flock. Thankfully Digi – Blends formulation will both clean the foot to enable the unique chemistry to carry out its task.

THIS IS VITAL TO ELIMINATE ANY EARLY STAGES OF INFECTION AND FOOT – ROT PROGRESSING THROUGHOUT THE HERD.

  • The dilution rate for each day outlined in the instructions in the above panel would be applicable to a herd of 150 +.
  • A herd less than this – A solution mix of 100ltrs prepared in the morning would be sufficient enough to use again in the evening.

This is a more cost effective way for smaller herds.
